Earlier this week, Suicide Squad film director, David Ayer (@davidayermovies) tweeted out our first official picture of the Joker. The Joker, being portrayed by Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Requiem For A Dream), has a unique cinematic look. All the Jokers in the past whether it be television or film have all had their differences from the previous incarnations and ultimately from the source material. Leto's Joker looks to follow that pattern with a look that resembles Frank Miller's All Star Batman and Robin. The DC cinematic universe has been pulling from Miller's house of ideas quite often as of late. Batman v. Superman, from what we have seen so far, draws heavily upon The Dark Knight Returns with the look of Batman and his power suit.

My Impressions...

The new look borrows from the classic Joker tropes; pale skin, green hair, and the signature purple glove. However, there are extreme differences; tattoos, metal capped teeth (grills), and more tattoos. I personally don't mind the new look. Sure, there are many tattoos that seem out of place or strange, but this is our first, alpha level, Joker in the new DC cinematic universe (DCCU). I'm pretty sure that the Joker will not be running around in the film shirtless. The teeth situation isn't really out of place for me. Presumably, this Joker has battled with Batman on occasion so it would only be natural that he had some teeth jostled. I see where the design team was going and can appreciate that they are trying something new. Overall, I'm just excited for more DC films!

Love it or hate it, there is going to be a new Joker on screen fleshed out by an amazingly talented actor. You can bet on David Ayer and his rap sheet of superb films to do the Joker and the Suicide Squad due justice.

Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), and Jared Leto (of course, the Joker). The film will release on August 5th, 2016.

What do you guys think of the new look of Joker?
